Tip of the day number five for Trixel Rocket, covering shields: what they do, how long they last, and how to get more of them. There's also a small but useful update to the game itself that shipped alongside this tip.
Tips are now in the game
Version 1.2 of Trixel Rocket released on the App Store, and it added a Tips button to the main menu. Tapping it takes you straight to the tips of the day.
That means you no longer have to leave the game to look up how something works. Moving this kind of guidance in-app is a sensible call for a mobile game, since the moment a player wants a tip is usually right after they've failed a level, and that is exactly the moment they're most likely to close the app instead.
Use the shields
The tip itself is simple: there's a shield button in the game, and when you get into a sticky situation, use it. Shields exist to protect you, and holding on to them out of caution defeats the point.
This is a common habit with consumable items in any game. Players hoard them for a moment that never quite arrives, then lose the level anyway. A shield you didn't spend is worth nothing.
How long a shield lasts
A shield lasts five seconds. That's short enough to matter and long enough to be genuinely decisive, so timing is the whole skill.
The game shows you the remaining duration in the UI on top of your ship, so you can watch the shield burn down while you're flying. Keep half an eye on it. Knowing you have two seconds left changes whether you push through a dense patch or wait for it to clear.
Five seconds is roughly enough to cross one difficult stretch. The best use is usually a section you already know is coming, not a panic tap after you've been hit.
Getting more shields
There are two routes in the shop. You can buy more shields with in-game currency earned by playing, or you can buy them with real money.
The in-game currency route ties directly back to gem collection during levels, which is why grabbing gems on the way through a level is worth the small detour even when you're focused on surviving. Every gem is future shields.
The overall shape of the tip: shields are a resource you're meant to spend, they last five seconds, the countdown is displayed above your ship, and the currency you collect while playing refills them. Play accordingly.
