Written Guide

Tip of the day number two for Trixel Rocket, and the subject is the comet levels. There's one thing to look for on these, and it applies to every comet level in the game.

The comet streams

On these levels, comets come at you in streams, and the bits in those streams are the enemies. Fly into one and your run is over.

A wall of incoming comets reads as impassable at first glance, which is why players tend to freeze or scatter. It isn't impassable.

Look for the gaps

The one thing to look for is the gaps. Every once in a while there are little gaps in the comet stream, and those gaps are your way through.

This works on all of the comet levels, not just the one being demonstrated. Once you know the gaps are always there, the levels change character: you're no longer waiting for a stream to end, you're scanning it for the opening you know exists.

In practice, don't try to outrun the stream or find a way around it. Hold your position, watch for the gap to come around, and take it when it does.

Committing to the gap

When the gap shows up, go. In the run demonstrated, a pesky comet comes in, the gap gets spotted, and the ship goes straight through — and it really is that easy once you've stopped fighting the stream.

The failure mode is spotting a gap and then hesitating. The stream keeps moving while you deliberate, so the gap you identified isn't the gap that's there a second later.

Gems and double gems

Scoring runs alongside the dodging. There are gems scattered through these levels, and there are double gems.

The double gems are worth five points versus one point for a standard gem. That's a real multiplier, and it's worth adjusting your line to pick one up when it sits on the far side of a gap you were going to take anyway.

What isn't worth it is breaking a good approach to chase a double gem through a closing gap. Five points doesn't cover the cost of restarting the level.

The short version

Comet streams always have gaps. Stop looking at the comets and start looking at the spaces between them, commit the instant you see an opening, and collect double gems when they fall on your route rather than making them the route.
