This intro walks through Layer.ai, an AI tool for generating game art, using only the free tier. There's a Unity plugin, but it doesn't do everything the website does — so the recommended workflow is to create assets on the site and import the exports into your game. The free version limits you to the Asset Studio with a handful of styles; the $30/month plan unlocks the Style Studio and more, but the free tools cover plenty.
Step 1 — Get oriented in Asset Studio
The workspace centers on a 512×512 canvas. Down the left side are selection, paint, and draw tools plus a color palette with preset and custom colors, along with key commands worth learning to speed up the workflow. The right side is the prompt panel where generation happens. Free styles include options like deliberate, game backgrounds, game characters, game icons, and game UI.
Step 2 — Prompt, enhance, and Forge
Pick the game characters style and start typing — as soon as you do, an enhance-prompt icon appears. It rewrites a thin prompt into a rich one: typing "young" became "close-up of a determined young dwarven steampunk engineer covered in gear tabs and schematic drawings, wearing goggles and leather apron." Prompt strength controls how tightly the output follows the text versus how creative the model gets; 50% is a solid middle. Hit Forge and after a short wait you get four candidate images to choose from.
Step 3 — Regenerate just the parts you don't like
This is the tool's real strength: you don't have to reroll the whole image. If the eyes are too small, select just the eye region, prompt "green eyes," and Forge — four new options for only that area, with similarity and prompt-strength controls again. Preview each candidate, confirm the winner, and the fix merges into the asset.
Step 4 — Draw to guide the AI
You can also steer generation with rough drawing. To turn the character's arm robotic, grab the brush, hold the command key to pick a grayish color, scribble over the arm, select the region, and prompt "a robotic arm with gears and wires." Forge, compare the four takes, confirm the best one. The sketch tells the AI where and roughly what — it handles the rendering.
Step 5 — Extend the canvas and export
Need a taller asset? The crop tool resizes the artboard, and the Refill option generates content to fill the new empty space — preview, confirm, done. When the asset's finished, export to temp, download the file, and bring it into your game. That's the full loop: prompt, refine region by region, extend, export — free game art with surprisingly fine control.
