A heads up from the Bliz Studio archive about a Unity Asset Store Black Friday sale with assets at 70 percent off. The specific dates have passed, but the structure of these sales repeats every year, so the mechanics below are still the useful part.
How the flash sale worked
The headline discount was 70 percent off, but with a catch: those 70 percent items were flash sales, and each one was only available for 24 hours. Miss the window on an asset you wanted and it went back to full price.
Unity also released the schedule for when each day's flash items would go live. The sale in question opened on November 14 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific time.
Check the schedule before the sale opens
The single most useful habit here is to look at the flash sale page on the Unity Asset Store before the sale starts. The schedule lets you see which assets are going to be discounted and on which day.
If there's a particular asset you've had your eye on, you can check whether it's in the lineup and when its 24 hour window falls. That turns a sale you have to monitor daily into one calendar reminder.
The wider 50 percent tier
Alongside the flash items, around 500 additional popular assets were discounted at 50 percent off for the duration of the sale rather than for a single day.
This is where most of the practical value usually sits. The 50 percent tier tends to include the well-supported, widely used tools, and because it runs for the whole sale you can take your time comparing options instead of buying under a countdown clock.
Buying sensibly during a sale
A 24 hour timer is designed to make you decide fast, and that is worth being aware of. The question to ask isn't whether the discount is good, it's whether the asset fits something you're actually building right now.
A useful filter: if the asset would save you time on a project already in progress, buy it. If it would be the reason to start a new project, wait. Asset Store libraries full of unused purchases are close to a universal indie dev experience.
One more thing worth checking on any asset before you buy: the last update date and whether it supports the Unity version and render pipeline you're on. A 70 percent discount on something that doesn't compile in your project is not a discount.
